| Concept of Deha Prakriti vis-ŕ-vis human constitution in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda the psychosomatic constitution, as also known as Deha Prakrti, is represented by a vivid description of the Physique, Physiology & psychological make-up of an individual. The Deha Prakrti is essentially genetically determined and is likely to be influenced by a variety of environmental factors to some extent. Dehaprakrti is the foremost factor which determines the pattern of susceptibility of an individual to different diseases, their prognosis, course and complications. |

| Hepatotoxicity of Eugenol

January-March 1994, 13(3):213-217EUGENOL a widely used pharmaceutical agent proceeds toxicity on inhalation in rats. Two different doses 20 & 30 μg/100g body weight/ day of eugenol were given intramuscularly to male albino rats for 10 days and the liver function was assessed by measuring the specific enzyme activities, and total and differential bilirubin concentration. There was an appreciable increase in total as well as differential bilirubin fractions and a dose dependent increase was noticed in the activities of alkaline phosphatase, transminases, lactate dehyrogenase with a decrease in the activity of glytamyl transferase activity, and suggesting eugenol to have a toxic effect on liver. |

| Variations in the progenesis of maturity onset Diabetes according to body constitution

January-March 1994, 13(3):293-301A series of forty patients of maturity onset diabetics was selected. Their body constitution was decided as Vataja (V), Pittaja (P) and Kaphaja (K) on the basis of physical, Psychic and socio-economic features as described in Ayurvedic classics. These groups were also supported by objective findings i.e., Aathropometric and Biochemical. In V ponderal index was found to be maximum (45.13 ± 3.28) with minimum body surface area (1.46 ± 0.15 sq. metre) along with acetylcholine level (1.1 ± 0.54 μg/ml) in blood. On contrary in K body surface are was maximum (1.625 ± 0.119 sq. metre) with minimum ponderal index (41.64 ± 5.43). Acetylcholine was lower (0.94 ± 0.38 μg/ml) and blood histamine was highest (0.160 ± 0.041 μg/ml) in this group. In P plasma catecholamines were observed to be highest (16.39 ± 8.55 μg/ml) and the physical findings were medium. Respectively in diabetics of V,P,K constitution the hyperglycemia was observed to be sever (256 ± 126.99 mg%) moderate (189.09 ± 94.49 mg%) and mild (173.77 ± 68.43 mg%). Correspondingly, plasma insulin was found to be lowest in P (9.15 ± 5.22 μu/ml) but was highest in K (18.44 ± 10.70 μu/ml).
When these patients were further divided into two groups on the basis of duration of illness i.e <5 years and >5years. It was observed that deterioration in glucose tolerance and fall in plasma insulin level was maximum in the patients of V constitution, minimum in K and medium in P. Thus the role of the body constitution, in the progression of diabetes assumes vital importance. |

| Ayurvedic identification and conceptual analysis of cancer

January-March 1994, 13(3):218-231Modern oncology is a rapidly growing area in medicine. Cancer is a disease diagnosed on the basis of cellular changes hence objectivity takes the lead. Clinical observation, detailed examination and some feasibility studies were conducted in Ayurvedic methods to understand and identify cancer systematically. Abdominal presentation as tumour is discussed since it is one of the major area for clinical diagnosis of cancer. More than 100 cases were followed in each type at all stages to understand the natural history and clinical behaviour. After careful study, the Ayurvedic diagnosis with possible aetiologic association has been arrived at and discussed. Three main classification has been made and presented separately. Visha concept of Ayurveda has been very closely found to be associated in malignancy. |

| Some clinical observations on Acne Vulgaris

Table I shows the trials taken on 125 patients, which attended our clinic, suffering from Acene, Plaques of Psoriasis Vulgaris, Psoriati arthritis and Keratinisation. These trials are taken at three different medical centres and results so obtained are recorded in this paper. |

| Role of Nadi pariksa in the diagnosis of Udar Roga

The term "Nadi" has been used in several contexts in Ayurvedic classes but gradually this term has been restricted to the Nadi Parkisa i.e. radial pulse examination. Importance of Nadi Pariksa as a diagnostic measure in systemic diseases including cardio-vascular system, G.I.T. diseases (Udar Roga) and Manas Roga is described in Ayurvedic literature. In modern medical science the pulse examination has been given much stress but it is limited to only C.V.S. Nadi is the foremost among the Astasthana Pariksa described in medieval texts on Ayurveda as the main points of general examination of a patient. In Ayurveda Nadi Pariksa is described in Udar Roga and other Vyadhis also. The present paper describes the variations of Nadi in some importants Udar Roga. |
